Mine awareness day: 45,000 killed and injured in recent wars in Afghanistan

0

Every year on April 4th, the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action is observed worldwide to raise awareness about the dangers of landmines. The United Nations Deputy Office in Afghanistan states that 45,000 people have been killed or injured by landmines as a result of decades of conflict in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, the United Nations commemorates this day on its website, stating that landmines claim or injure one person every hour worldwide.

The United Nations reports that landmines, remnants of war, continue to cause fatalities and injuries, especially in conflict situations.

The Afghanistan branch of the Save the Children organization reported on the Wednesday that nearly 60 children, mostly, become victims of leftover mine explosions monthly.

According to this organization, Afghanistan is considered one of the most mine-contaminated countries.

UNAMA adds that in recent years, over 30,100 square kilometers of land in Afghanistan have been cleared of mines, but serious efforts are still needed in this regard.
