Carragher says Postecoglu has to ‘change’ one thing to be successful at Spurs
Jamie Carragher has said that Tottenham Hotspur have to improve defensively if they are to compete for the biggest trophies over the next year or two.
Even though Tottenham have been a little inconsistent over the last few months and have at times found it difficult to break down low blocks, there is no doubt that this season has been a successful one for Ange Postecoglou so far, considering the state the club was in when he took over last summer.
The Australian has been able to quickly transform the Lilywhites from a counter-attacking outfit to a front-foot possession-based side.
Despite the loss of Harry Kane, Spurs have also had no issues finding the back of the net, having scored 62 goals in 30 league games so far.
However, the worry is at the other end of the pitch, with Postecoglou’s men having conceded 44 goals this season, which for context is just three fewer than Chelsea, who sit in 12th place.
Tottenham need to improve their defence
Carragher suggested that Tottenham have to shore up their defence if they are to close the gap with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
The pundit told The Overlap: “What people forget about Pep’s football is that his teams are always the best defensively or certainly one of the best. My worry is how many goals you concede.
“That has to change. People always talk about Pep’s football and we talk about him with the ball but off the ball is fantastic as well. That would have to be a big shift if Tottenham are going to win the biggest trophies.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Carragher’s point is a fair one as even when Tottenham have an upper hand in matches, they do not have the sort of defensive control that the likes of Man City and Liverpool do. That is perhaps the next stage of evolution for this Spurs side.
