Man faces 40 years in prison after Fentanyl conviction

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A Lafayette Parish jury convicted a man of possessing Fentanyl for the purpose of distributing it, authorities said.
A state district court jury Wednesday found Markale James Thibeaux guilty of possession with intent to distribute Fentanyl stemming from a traffic stop by Lafayette Police on Nov. 9, 2020 which yielded 45 grams of Fentanyl.
District Attorney Don Landry said the conviction was an important one.
“These types of drugs are the most dangerous coming into our community right now, and this conviction sends a sharp message to drug dealers in Lafayette that we will continue to convict them and remove them from our community,” Landry said.
Sentencing will take place on June 19 before district judge Valerie Gotch-Garrett, with Thibeaux facing a sentence of up to 40 years at hard labor.
