Heavy snow, storm damage in Warren County
QUEENSBURY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — It might be Spring Break but it doesn't feel like it. As the old saying goes, April showers bring May flowers ....is snow showers what they had in mind? Wet packable snow blanketed Warren County, the prefect kind for snowballs!
“We are used to snow, pretty well into April, even early May sometimes, but to have this much heavy wet snow is an unusual storm even for us up here in the North Country” said Don Leman, Warren County's Public Affairs director.
Lehman says Power Outages by the thousands plagued 30-40 percent of National Grid customers Thursday. “It’s a cold day. Hopefully people have some back up heating sources because it might be a little while for this one" Lehman added.
If you were looking forward to warmer weather and blooming flowers—April, fools! Old man winter proved he isn’t ready to retire and he won't go without a fight. In Weavertown, a tree was knocked down and tangled in power lines creating major traffic backups in the area.
Thursday's winter storm comes on the heels of a major travel weekend. An influx of people are expected to flock to the North Country to book hotels close to the path of totality for Monday's Solar Eclipse. Whether or not this will slow down travel, Lehman says people are determined.
“People have had reservations for years. We just heard about one couple that made reservations seven years ago to come up here so I mean this is a big deal for some people have” said Lehman.
On a positive note, if you're looking to ski in the North country, this weekend is West Mountain’s last weekend for the sport. They still expect thin snow coverage, with only the northwest side of the mountain open.
