‘American Idol 22’ episode 13 recap: Who made the Top 10 and who was eliminated on ‘Billboard #1 Hits Night’? [Live Blog]

Tonight on “American Idol,” Meghan Trainor mentors the Top 12 before they perform their favorite Billboard #1 hits live, giving their all to earn America’s vote for the coveted Top 10. 2008 runner-up David Archuleta also returns to perform his new single.

8:00 p.m. — Previously on “American Idol”! The Top 14 performed for a spot in the Top 12. The top vote-getters advanced as judges Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie watched host Ryan Seacrest send Jordan Anthony and Nya home. Who will be eliminated tonight?

8:02 p.m. — Up first tonight was Abi Carter taking on “All Too Well.” Meghan thought Abi was taking a big risk with the song because of Taylor’s popularity and then advised her to not leave so much empty space at the end of the song because it’s a vocal competition. Following her performance where Abi also played piano, Luke acknowledged that she wasn’t “as shiny” as she was last night and warned her about getting too comfortable at the piano. Lionel did like that she “pushed” herself and encouraged her to continue to do that. Katy told her that her strength is drawing the audience in and wants “angelic every single time.”

8:09 p.m. — Meghan helped Will Moseley work through “Startin’ Over” by asking him to smile more often in his performance because she sees it as one of his tools to use. Lionel thought “the song was right, the rhythm was right” and says that he has “instant identity” with his voice. Katy emphasized Meghan’s point by telling him that he has to match his big voice and personality with his face, thinking that there’s “more you can give” there. Luke put it in new terms by saying that “it’s a little bit of acting” that he has to do when performing, but he said that tonight was an “ace in the hole.”

8:20 p.m. — Next up was Jayna Elise with “Diamonds,” a song that is so popular that she was nervous she wouldn’t be able to make it her own. Meghan gave her the confidence that her “impressive tricks” are enough to “prove” herself with the song. Katy thought it was “so balanced” and “so measured,” making it the “perfect formula” for her as an artist. Luke added that it was a “timeless, professional” performance and cautioned her to “not let off the gas” if she continues in the competition. Lionel said that he “marvels” at her ability to turn any song into her own.

8:30 p.m. — In Meghan’s sessions with Mia Matthews on the track “Over You,” she thought it was important for Mia to change her body language because there’s still some immaturity that shows through. Luke thought Mia nailed the goal of “looking like a star.” Lionel agrees that she’s “grown so much” and it’s evident that she’s “taking control” of her artistry in this moment. Katy added that her vocals have also grown and challenged her to “start moving around” on the stage because it’s the physicality that she needs to show to “get to the top.”

8:42 p.m. — Taking on Katy’s own #1 hit “Roar” was Roman Collins with an intentional move to take a risk by stripping it down. Meghan was nervous about the risky move, but still thought it was “smart and cool and brave” of him to do. The judges gave him a standing ovation after his performance. Lionel commented that he has “never failed to take it over the top.” Katy told Roman that it was “amazing” and her parents are his biggest fans. Luke said that he started off on one level and then delivered “the moment” later in the song.

8:48 p.m. — Jack Blocker chose “Blinding Nights” for his performance, and though Meghan called his the “coolest flip of a song,” she had to work with him on the tempo of it during their rehearsal. Katy thought he “did it again” because he “keeps the people guessing” with the way he switches things up every week. Luke thought it was “really, really cool” but he still wanted “a little more energy” from his performance. Lionel closed by saying that it’s clear he’s in control of who he wants to be and has a “unique presentation.”

8:59 p.m. — Meghan thought Emmy Russell was struggling in her rehearsal of “Lose You to Love Me” and so they had to work through the lyrics and the melody so that Emmy would get more comfortable with it. Luke acknowledged that Emmy has been “taken out of so many of [her] comfort zones” and so he applauds her for “continuing to shine.” Lionel reminded her that she “can’t mess up” because the audience never knows what happens in rehearsal. Katy said she likes the rendition because it was “authentically” her and one of her best vocal performances.

9:04 p.m. — The next performer was Triston Harper with his dedication to his girlfriend in the way of the song “Beautiful Crazy.” Lionel thought it was great, but cautioned him to “don’t lose your power” when you’re singing. Katy also liked it, but liked the “Elvis stuff” from Sunday’s show. Luke agreed that it’s a “different kind of night” compared to Sunday and so he’s having to readjust his expectations.

9:16 p.m. — Julia Gagnon picked the song “Something in the Orange” because of the personal connection of it following a death in the family. Meghan’s hope for her performance was that she shows her stage presence to the judges and audience. Katy called it one of her favorite performances because of the dynamics and said it’s “about the dance.” Luke thanked her for showing “all of your tricks” and adding the big moments to a delicate song. Lionel said that after last night and tonight Julia is “back in the game.”

9:24 p.m. — David Archuleta brought his new song “Hell Together,” a dedication to his mother, to the stage. He explained that the song was about his coming out of the closet and how his mom decided to step away from the church in support of him because she doesn’t want to be a part of a community that doesn’t support her child.

9:27 p.m. — Admittedly a “superfan” of Meghan in high school, Kaibrienne was super excited to get to work with her in rehearsal. Meghan challenged her to go full voice at certain points of “Wrecking Ball” so that she doesn’t ruin her voice with all the falsettos. Luke appreciated that she “explored” bigger songs and called the ending “truly incredible.” Lionel suggested that the crack in her voice should be her signature and Katy urged her to “let it fly” with her performances just like she did on Sunday night.

9:38 p.m. — McKenna Faith Breinholt wasn’t able to meet with Meghan in person because she was on the tail end of an illness, but they were able to video message through her first passes on “Cardigan.” Meghan had her take the song up an octave so that she would be more comfortable and in her zone for the song. Katy called it her “favorite” and Luke said it was “so pro, so next level.”

9:46 p.m. — The closing performance of the night was KAYKO‘s version of “Somebody That I Used to Know,” but Meghan was worried about his breath control with all of the movement he was planning for the stage. After his performance, all three judges rushed the stage to give him hugs out of excitement for his lively set. Luke said that “it worked” and Lionel gave him three big “wow” exclamations.

9:56 p.m. — With voting closed during the commercial break, Ryan revealed the names of the 10 singers that earned enough votes to move on: Abi, McKenna, Will, KAYKO, Kaibrienne, Mia, Jack, Emmy, Triston, and Julia. That meant that Jayna and Roman were eliminated.
