Bears have fewest draft picks in franchise history — and among NFL teams — this year

The Bears will focus on quality over quantity in the NFL Draft this week. Their four selections are the fewest in franchise history. They had five picks four times — in 2010, 2011, 2017 and 2019.

The Bears’ four selections — Nos. 1 and 9 in the first round, No. 75 in the third and No. 122 in the fourth — are the fewest in the NFL this year. The Browns, Dolphins and Giants have the next-fewest at six apiece.

The Bears have traded away more 2024 draft picks than they own. They sent No. 40 overall (second round) to the Commanders for defensive end Montez Sweat; No. 110 (fourth) to the Chargers for receiver Keenan Allen; No. 144 (fifth) to the Bills for center Ryan Bates; No. 184 (sixth) to the Dolphins for offensive lineman Dan Feeney, who spent last season with them; and No. 231 (seventh) to the Patriots for receiver N’Keal Harry, who played for them in 2022.

This week will mark a change of course for general manager Ryan Poles, who picked a combined 21 players in his first two drafts. Asked about trading back from No. 9 to get more picks, he said last month that the Bears’ pick situation ‘‘actually pairs up really well with how I think [the draft] is going to play out.’’
