MS Dhoni’s SMART Move Saves CSK Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad From Second Slow-Over Rate Offence in IPL 2024
Chennai: Given all his experience of playing the Indian Premier League, MS Dhoni knows it all. Dhoni could sense on Tuesday that CSK were a little behind the over rate and realising it, he quickly started moving things quickly. From sprinting between overs to go to the other side to getting the field set quickly, Dhoni did it all to save Gaikwad. According to the rules, if the franchise doesn’t complete the overs in the allotted time in three games, the skipper is suspended for a match.
But despite all of this, CSK ended up losing the match by six wickets as Marcus Stoinis pulled off a heist.
“Tough pill to swallow, but good game of cricket. LSG played really well in the back end. We had the game in control till 13-14 overs, but Stoinis played a great innings. (On dew) It played a part, there was a huge amount of dew and it took our spinners out of the game. We could have otherwise controlled the game better and taken it deeper. But these are parts of the game, can’t control it,” Gaikwad said at the post-match presentation.
Earlier, Marcus Stoinis defied the odds with his relentless onslaught and his maiden ton guided LSG to a win.
Stoinis also broke the highest individual score in an IPL chase of Paul Valthaty’s 120* in 2011, also against CSK, after scoring 124 not out in 63 deliveries. In three games before this, no team has come to Chepauk this season and beaten CSK. No team has come here and chased down 211. LSG did both in the same match, led by a magnificent hundred by Stoinis.
