PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — One person who was riding a motorcycle during a crash died in Salem Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The Salem Police Department identified 32-year-old Zachary Hendrickson, of Salem, as the motorcyclist who was injured and subsequently died. Despite efforts from bystanders and a police officer who rendered Hendrickson aid in the immediate aftermath of the crash, he was later declared dead by paramedics.

It was just after 7 a.m. that multiple people reported a crash between a motorcycle and a car on Commercial St. SE, which was shut down between Hilfiker Ln. and 12th St. Cutoff for three and a half hours while an investigation was carried out.

Authorities said the crash happened when a sedan moving south on Commercial St. began turning east into a parking lot when the motorcycle crashed into it. The driver of the sedan was identified as 54-year-old Salem resident Shannon Evans, who authorities said “remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.”

Police said no further updates are available, including if any arrests or citations were issued. However, authorities said it was the 10th traffic fatality to occur in Salem this year.
