Zack Gelof heads to the injured list with an oblique strain
The Oakland Athletics made it official Thursday placing second baseman Zack Gelof on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain. Infielder Darell Hernaiz was recalled to take Gelof’s spot on the active roster.

Gelof homered in Monday’s series opening win over the Yankees, but it has been an otherwise disappointing start to the season. He heads to the injured list hitting .196/.260/.337 with three homers and a 78 wRC+ in 101 plate appearances. Gelof produced a 133 wRC+ in his debut last season.
Hernaiz made the Opening Day roster and then played sparingly before getting sent back to Triple A. He appeared in 17 games with the A’s, but totaled just 32 plate appearances while going 3-for-29 with 10 strikeouts. He appeared in six games at Las Vegas after the demotion and was 4-for-19 with a double and a homer.
An oblique strain is a tricky injury that typically takes time to recover from depending on how severe it is. The thinking would be that Gelof will likely miss at least a month.
