Diphtheria is a disease caused by toxin producing bacteria. In severe cases, it can be deadly. It is currently seeing a historic resurgence in West Africa, which has seen more than 16,000 cases since mid-May and 800 deaths in Nigeria alone. Guinea, Mauritania and Niger are among the other countries in the region to have seen alarming outbreaks.
