Grant will fuel upper-floor housing on Kansas main streets

TOPEKA (KSNT) - A new grant opportunity will provide funds to create upper-floor housing on Kansas' main streets.

On Thursday, May 9 Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland announced $400,000 would go towards the Residential Opportunities on Main Street (ROOMS) grant program. The program is focused on addressing housing shortages and enhancing livability in downtowns.

“Main Street communities across the state long have been revitalizing their historic business districts and supporting economic vitality,” Toland said. “Increasing the amount of available upper-floor housing is essential to maximizing the economic potential of Main Streets across Kansas. ROOMS grants provide another powerful tool to breathe new life into their downtown areas.”

Funds will be available to communities that have state-recognized main streets. Funds will be available to applicants who show the funds will lead to housing creation on upper floors of downtown buildings. Applicants can be awarded up to $50,000.
