Delhi Capitals Captain Rishabh Pant Gets One-Match Suspension Ahead Of RCB Vs DC Clash In IPL 2024
New Delhi: Delhi Capitals were dealt with a heavy blow on Saturday ahead of their much-important clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru as captain Rishabh Pant was handed a one-match suspension for slow over-rate. The development comes in after Delhi Capitals maintained a slow over-rate in their match against Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on May 07.
Additionally, Pant was fined Rs 30 lakhs since it was Delhi Capitals’ third such instance in the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences. “The rest of the members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were each individually fined either Rs 12 lakh or 50 per cent of their respective match fees, whichever is lesser,” the IPL statement stated.
“As per Article 8 of the IPL Code of Conduct, the Delhi Capitals filed an appeal challenging the ruling of the Match Referee. Following this, the appeal was referred to the BCCI Ombudsman for review. The Ombudsman conducted a virtual hearing and affirmed that the decision of the Match Referee remains final and binding,” it added further.
With 12 points from the same number of matches, Delhi Capitals are placed fifth in the points table and have a great chance of making it to the playoffs. They have two league games left – against RCB (May 12) and Lucknow Super Giants (on May 14) – and need to win both to get maximum of 16 points. At the same time, Delhi Capitals would pray both Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings lose one of more of their remaining games.
Having won just one game in their first five matches, Delhi Capitals made a remarkable turnaround by winning five in their next seven games. Notably, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals have all but qualified for the playoffs with 16 points each. SRH placed third with 14 points while CSK sit a place below with 12 points. LSG are also on 12 points but in sixth place.
