Is Louisiana a safe place to raise a family? See where the state ranks

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- A new study using FBI crime data shows which states in the nation are the safest and most dangerous to raise a family.

The study conducted by Omega Law Group used two metrics, violent crimes and property crimes.

New Hampshire ranked as the safest place to raise a family with a combined total crime rate of 1,131 per 100,000 people. The report said the state has a low car theft rate and homicide rate.

Following behind, Idaho ranked second in the study with a combined total crime rate of 1,153 per 100,000 people and Maine ranked third with a combined total rate of 1,307 crimes per 100,000 residents.

The state identified as the most dangerous place to raise a family was New Mexico. According to data, the state has the highest violent crime rate and second-highest homicide rate.

Washington ranked the second most dangerous state with a combined total crime rate of 3,763 per 100,000 and Colorado ranked third with a combined crime rate of 3,617 per 100,000.

Louisiana ranked fourth with a combined total crime rate of 3,389 per 100,000 people. The study said the Pelican State's violent crime rate is 66.5% higher than the national average.
