Two CT officers hit by car during welfare check. Woman charged with assault after fleeing.
A woman with an alleged “history of aggressive behavior” was arrested this week after she allegedly hitting two Windsor Locks police officers with a car during a welfare check.
Two officers were dispatched to Arbor Street on Tuesday at 5 p.m. to meet with a community health resources representative who was initiating a welfare check on 22-year-old Erica Verona, who has an alleged “long history of aggressive behavior,” according to the Windsor Locks Police Department.
The first officer and a community health resources case manager were speaking with Verona outside when police allege she abruptly moved to her vehicle parked in the driveway. As Verona entered the vehicle claiming to be “getting her vape pen,” the first officer followed, police said. Verona then allegedly started the vehicle and the officer, concerned for her and the possibility that she was reaching for a weapon, attempted to shut off the vehicle, according to police. Verona then allegedly struck the officer in the forehead with the vape pen, causing a laceration, police said.
According to police, the second officer approached the driver’s side of the vehicle as both law enforcement officials allegedly saw Verona attempting to put the car in gear. Verona then reversed and accelerated at a high rate of speed. Both officers were struck by the driver’s side door as Verona fled out of the driveway, police said.
The first officer was reportedly bleeding heavily from the forehead, police said, as a third officer provided medical attention until EMS arrived. Both officers were transported to Hartford Hospital where they were treated for lacerations
and bruises and released, according to police.
An all-points bulletin was relayed to all area police departments, Windsor Locks police said.
Enfield police located Verona in a CVS parking lot on Enfield Street and took her into custody without incident.
Verona was booked by the Windsor Locks Police Department and charged with two counts of assault on a police officer, two counts of first-degree reckless endangerment, two counts of interfering with a police officer and one count of breach of peace.
