CT man accused of dumping dog that recently gave birth arrested on animal cruelty charges
A Connecticut man was arrested on animal cruelty charges after a young dog that had recently given birth to puppies was found dumped in Wolcott in April, according to city officials.
Jose Solivan, 27, of Waterbury turned himself into the Wolcott Police Department on Thursday after being notified there was a warrant for his arrest charging him with cruelty to animals and false statement, police said.
On April 16, a nursing female dog who was still producing milk was found running up Spindle Hill by the intersection of Mad River Road in Wolcott with no collar, tags or microchip, according to Wolcott Animal Control.
Wolcott police and animal control officers worked with Desmond’s Army Animal Law Advocates, Army’s Legacy Animal Rescue And Sanctuary and R&R Roofing to offer a reward for information leading to the safe return of her puppies.
After an investigation, police learned that Solivan was the person who allegedly sold the puppies that were less than two weeks old and to young to be removed from their mother’s care.
Solivan then allegedly dumped the mother dog on the side of the road, which prompted the investigation, according to police.
“We are happy to report that we have recovered five of the seven puppies, who are all doing very well,” the police said on Thursday.
Solivan was being held on a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, according to police. As a condition of his release, Solivan is not allowed to possess any animals.
Due to the fact that the puppies were sold prematurely in Waterbury, the Waterbury Police Deptartment is also investigating Solivan, Wolcott police said, and an arrest is expected.
