Christian Slater, Patrick Gibson, and Molly Brown to star in prequel series ‘Dexter: Original Sin’
Christian Slater stars in a crime thriller series as the father of a mentally unwell young man who narrates his vigilante activities in a near-monotone voiceover.
Sounds familiar, right?
The Golden Globe-winning “Mr. Robot” star has signed on to Paramount+ with Showtime’s Dexter prequel series “Dexter: Original Sin” in a very similar role to the one he played on Mr. Robot. He’ll play Harry Morgan, Dexter’s adoptive father and a Miami homicide detective, the streaming service announced Thursday. James Remar played Harry in the original series.
“Shadow and Bone” actor Patrick Gibson will play Dexter Morgan, who in the prequel is beginning his career as a serial killer who kills other serial killers. He was played by Michael C. Hall in the original series. And “Senior Year” actress Molly Brown will play a young version of Dexter’s sister Debra Morgan, who was played in the original by Jennifer Carpenter.
Clyde Phillips returns as showrunner and executive producer for the 10-episode season. The new series, previously known as “Dexter: Origins,” is set 15 years before the start of “Dexter.”
Here’s the official description, via Paramount+: “Set in 1991 Miami, ‘Dexter: Original Sin’ follows Dexter as he transitions from student to avenging serial killer. When his bloodthirsty urges can’t be ignored any longer, Dexter must learn to channel his inner darkness. With the guidance of his father, Harry, he adopts a code designed to help him find and kill people who deserve to be eliminated from society without getting on law enforcement’s radar. This is a particular challenge for young Dexter as he begins a forensics internship at the Miami Metro Police Department.”
“Dexter,” which was based on a novel by Jeff Lindsay, originally ran for eight seasons on Showtime between 2006 and 2013. The show was nominated for 24 Emmy Awards over the course of its run, including four consecutive nods for Best Drama Series. It was the first Showtime series ever nominated in that category. It returned for a sequel limited series, “Dexter: New Blood,” in 2021, which served as a new series finale after the much-maligned original.
