Football’s Square Mile Officially Opens and Queen’s Park are suitably recognised
Scotland’s oldest Football Club, Queen’s Park are delighted to join with their colleagues at The Scottish FA in congratulating The Hampden Collection on the official demarcation and opening of the world’s biggest open-air football museum – Football’s Square Mile.
Football’s Square Mile Alliance was formed to recognise, preserve and promote some of the earliest and most significant origins of association football in Scotland and one small corner of Glasgow contains 21 different football heritage sites.
These sites collectively represent the point of origin for the modern passing, running and combination game that is now enjoyed by more than 3.5 billion people around the world.
One of the 21 sites is, of course, the place where on 9 July 1867 a group of gentlemen met on the south side of Glasgow ‘for the purpose of forming a Football Club’ with that club being Queen’s Park.
The tenement block at 400-404 Victoria Road, today incorporating the Victoria Bar, now stands where 3 Eglinton Terrace was, and Graeme Brown and Ashley Rawson from The Hampden Collection marked the placing of a plaque commemorating the site’s historical importance along with Annie Kane who is the operator of the bar.
Spiders supporters Andy Neil and David McCartney were on hand to watch the unveiling along with club directors Gregor Hall and Lynne McCartney.
The Football Square Mile project has gone from strength to strength thanks to the dedicated work of The Hampden Collection, their fellow Football’s Square Mile Alliance partners and supporters from across the globe.
Graeme Brown, who founded of The Hampden Collection, explained: “This is the culmination of an incredible journey that began back in 2017 with the discovery of the first Hampden Park.
“This journey now sees us recognise, and celebrate, 21 sites across the southside of Glasgow that represent the origins of modern football. The story continues as we look forward to further championing the case for the award of UNESCO World Heritage Status for Football’s Square Mile.”
Club Director Gregor Hall added: “We were delighted to come along and mark the recognition of this historic site. If no meeting had be held here all those years ago the story of football would be very different.
“There is also a plaque at The city Stadium to recognise the huge role Queen’s Park played in establishing football as our national sport. I would encourage everyone to learn more about Football’s Square Mile.”
