On Friday, Dame Helen Mirren walked the red carpet at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in a royal purple gown and black patent leather pumps. The esteemed British actress attended the event outside the Palais des Festivals for the world premiere of the French animated drama “La Plus Précieuse des Marchandises” (“The Most Precious of Cargoes”).

Mirren’s long-sleeve gown was made of amethyst-colored satin that crisscrossed around the bodice and hung off her shoulders to form a V-neckline. The skirt billowed to the ground with a subtle slit revealing her shoes. The pièce de résistance was the sweeping train, adding a dramatic flair to the jewel-toned outfit.
To complement the dress, Mirren wore patent black slingback stilettos, which also included a strap with a delicate buckle across the front of the foot. While not as tall as some of Mirren’s previous footwear choices, the shoe appears to have a 3 to 5-inch heel. She heightened the look further with a sparkling diamond necklace and matching earrings.

The 78-year-old actress is familiar with the Croisette, having won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actress for her performance in the 1984 film “Cal.” In addition to her acting prowess, she is known for her distinctive sense of style, ranging from refined elegance to more unconventional looks. Last year at the festival, Mirren appeared on the carpet with her hair dyed various shades of blue to match her periwinkle gown at a screening of “Jeanne du Barry,” and wore 7-inch metallic platform heels. A few months prior to that, she wore 6-inch Vivienne Westwood heels for the “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” photo call.

Michel Hazanavicius’ Holocaust drama “The Most Precious of Cargoes,” competing for the prestigious Palme d’Or, follows a Jewish girl who is thrown off a train on the way to Auschwitz by her father and is later discovered by a woodcutter and his family. This year’s Cannes Film Festival started on May 14 and ends on Saturday, May 25.
