Motorsports Newsletter 5/22/24
By Richard Parks
EDITORIAL: "Regarding fuel burners, the current administration seems to grab the rules, for any class, out of thin air, without any rhyme or reason, and I think that the long-term goal is to have Top Fuel, Funny Car, maybe a doorslammer class of some sort, and have everybody else just run some kind of money bracket. It sounds somewhat outlandish, but if you read an NHRA Rulebook, you’ll see what I mean. The old Modified Production and Gas class cars were a prime example of how a couple of kids from nowhere could put together a car that they could afford, took their lumps, got whipped at some National events, learned a few things, became competitive, won some races, and moved on up. Nobody will remember their names now, but they were here, they were real. NHRA remembers none of this, and I would be willing to bet that there are few, if any at all, in the current administration, that have ever been down a drag strip in a REAL race car and have felt the effects thereof. There’s more that I could and would say, but why bother, they won’t change their ways." Bob Small (original article shortened due to space issues)
REBUTTAL of sorts: Some have raised legitimate questions, such as, "Why do you allow content that defends or attacks organizations like the IHRA, AHRA or NHRA?" Such people, who admire, or dislike certain people also ask why I don’t defend or attack people, groups or topics. There are several replies I could make. One is that of time; if it happened today perhaps such a view would be offensive and I would answer them, but much of what we discuss happened half a century ago, or even a century, and over time, a long period of time, the anger has gone, and in fact the event is now
somewhat humorous. There are many sides to a question, and I look at all of them and use rational logic to make sense of it all. Do we REALLY KNOW what the officials have to go through to run an organization? I will start asking them and bring you their answers and maybe they aren’t so bad after all.

EDITOR: Don’t gamble away the house, wife and kids. A nickel won is enough for bragging rights.
AND: I enjoy getting the newsletter every week and I read it from top to bottom. Just one thing I would ask of anyone publicizing an event: Please say What it is, When it is, and Where it is. You’d be surprised but almost no one gets all three! The "when" part needs to include the time, too. Thanks, and keep up the good work! MARK VAUGHN, Autoweek Editor
