Report: How much Tottenham would have to pay to sign Marcus Edwards this summer

Speculation is mounting that Marcus Edwards could make a return to Tottenham Hotspur, and Sporting Lisbon are reportedly willing to let him go for roughly €20m (£17m) this summer.

Edwards started his career at Spurs, coming through the academy before moving on in search of regular first-team football.

The winger joined Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019, before signing for Sporting in January 2022. As part of the deal, Tottenham retained a sell-on clause for Edwards, which could come in handy right now.

Edwards had a blistering campaign last year, but has fallen down the pecking order in Portugal this term. Still, he has managed to register six goals and nine assists in 44 appearances across all competitions for Sporting (Transfermarkt).

Now, he could be set for a return to the Premier League. According to Record (via Sport Witness), Edwards is keen to come back to Spurs.

Alasdair Gold had previously suggested that, thanks to the 35% sell-on clause in Edwards’ contract, Spurs could nab the player for under £10m.

However, the latest from A Bola claims that price tag may be slightly higher, but still very much affordable, as Sporting prepare to let Edwards move on.

Apparently, Edwards has “good eyes” set on the reunion with Spurs. Despite interest from West Ham, it is thought the sell-on clause gives the Lilywhites the advantage in this transfer battle.

And, Sporting are willing to accept an offer of around €20m (£17m) for the 25-year-old. It is unclear whether that value includes the 35% discount – if not, it would bring the figure down to £11m.

I think this is a very sensible and affordable option for us this summer. Edwards is a quality player, he fills a position we need reinforcements in, and he’s a homegrown, club-trained player who would cost very little. This one seems to be a no-brainer, really, unless we have bigger targets available.
