University of Virginia to pay $9 million over shooting that killed 3 football players
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (NEXSTAR) — University of Virginia will pay a $9 million settlement over a shooting that killed three football players and wounded two students.
According to attorney Kimberly Wald, who works with the Miami-based firm representing the estate of D'Sean Perry, one of the slain players, the university will pay $2 million each to the families of all three football players who were killed.
Another $3 million will go to the two wounded students, Marlee Morgan and football player Mike Hollins.
Police say the deadly 2022 shooting was carried out by former UVA student and football player Christopher Darnell Jones Jr. after he and his teammates returned to campus on a charter bus.
Jones Jr. allegedly started shooting near a parking garage close to the heart of the campus, prompting a 12-hour lockdown.
The slain football players were identified as Lavel Davis Jr., Devin Chandler and D’Sean Perry.
At the request of UVA leaders in the wake of the shootings, outside investigators looked into the school's safety policies, its response to the deadly shooting and any prior knowledge it might have had of a potential threat posed by Darnell Jones Jr.
School officials did confirm that Jones Jr. had been on the radar of the team that handles threat assessment at UVA.
Jones Jr. is charged with aggravated murder and is due in court for trial in January.
