Final Score: Phillies 9, Padres 2
After a nearly two-week road trip spanning London, Boston and Baltimore, the Phillies returned home on Monday to begin a three-game series against the San Diego Padres. In front of the sold-out crowd of 43,134 at Citizens Bank Park, they easily handled San Diego en route to a 9-2 win.
Kyle Schwarber (twice) and Alec Bohm each homered. And, after a four-inning, four-run outing in his last start, Cristopher Sánchez got back to the pitcher he’s been most of the season, firing a strong seven innings in which he allowed just two runs (one earned) on six hits.
Schwarber hadn’t homered in June entering play last Tuesday. Then, he went deep twice in a win over the Red Sox. Three nights later, he hit a leadoff homer at Camden Yards. Tonight, he went deep twice (again), launching a second inning home run to put the Phillies on the board first, and then hitting another in the sixth to give them a seven-run cushion. All of sudden, Schwarber now has five home runs in June, all coming in the span of less than a week, and leads the Phillies with 16 homers overall.
As for Bohm, his fifth inning home run was his seventh on the season and comes after a strong weekend in Baltimore. Bohm recorded three straight multi-hit games against the Orioles, going a combined 8-for-14 with three doubles. Monday marked his fourth straight multi-hit performance as he recorded two singles on top of his home run.
With the offense providing plenty of run support, Sánchez had room to breathe. He had command of his sinker and changeup, which allowed him to induce nine ground-ball outs, record five strikeouts and only walk one batter. Sánchez’s performance lowered his ERA on the season to 2.91 through 14 starts.
Highlights
The Phillies threatened to score twice in the bottom of the second but were unsuccessful. Bohm attempted to score from first base on a Nick Castellanos double but was thrown out at the plate on a close play. Later in the frame, David Dahl struck out with runners on the corners to end the inning.
Schwarber’s first home run of the night came after a Rafael Marchán single started the bottom of the second inning.
The Phillies increased their lead to three runs in the fourth after Brandon Marsh scored from third base on a bloop single by Marchán.
San Diego scored their first run of the game a half inning later as a Jake Cronenworth ground out to Bryson Stott allowed Manny Machado to score from third.
Following a Trea Turner leadoff single and Bryce Harper double in the bottom of the fifth, Bohm’s home run extended the Phillies’ lead to 6-1.
