Former Dane Brevin Easton aiming for Jaguars roster spot
JACKSONVILLE, FL (NEWS10) -- Organized team activities and both the rookie and mandatory minicamps are in the books in the NFL, with both rookies and veterans trying to make their respective teams. One of those players? Former UAlbany wideout Brevin Easton.
Easton signed with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent. He's gunning for a spot on the 53-man roster. "I'm definitely grateful for this opportunity and that I got to be up here for a while now," said Easton. "Just keep gettin' a taste of like NFL football."
Easton is no stranger to fighting for a spot. The wideout was a zero star recruit who went to Division-II Assumption before transferring to UAlbany. "Coming into UAlbany, it was definitely a transition as well," said Easton. "That's the same type of approach that I take to being in the NFL. Coming from a Division-II school and even being in high school coming to Division-I football, there's definitely stuff that you have to go through and it's just like a change. It's going up a level. That's how I see this process."
Easton spent two seasons with the Great Danes, racking up over 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns last year. That time with UAlbany has helped prepare him for this latest challenge. "Having a work ethic," said Easton. "Seeing talented athletes and guys that are the best of the best all over and competing against those guys."
Easton has been turning heads during the Jaguars minicamps and OTAs, partly because of that work ethic. "Just doing my job, just being complimented on executing and being where I'm supposed to be," said Easton.
But there are certain nuances that bring about a learning curve for rookies. For wide receivers, route running becomes even more detailed. But Easton has a good group showing him the way. "I've been just focusing on getting better each day and just to keep learning as much as possible, especially l from guys that are in front of me that have been doing it for a while, like Christian Kirk, Gabe Davis, Parker Washington, Devin Duvernay, and just my whole receiving corps," said Easton. "We're pretty good at like being explosive. So that's one thing that I definitely want to keep trying to add to my game and take from those guys."
Easton will report to training camp on July 19th, where the fight for a roster spot will really heat up. It's set to be a busy month for Easton. He and his girlfriend are also expecting a son. His support system has helped him during this busy but blessed time. "My family, my girlfriend, my dad, my grandmother, everyone that I have around me, some of my coaches growing up, just people I can lean on," said Easton. "Whenever I need a break to, like, take my mind off things or talk, I can just go to them. It's definitely a blessing and I'm definitely looking forward to all of it. I'm just thankful to be where I'm at and just ready to go."
