Hardik Pandya to Replace Rohit Sharma as India’s T20I Captain – BCCI Secy Jay Shah Drops HINT
Barbados: Now that the T20 World Cup 2024 is over and Rohit Sharma has announced his retirement, it is going to be very interesting to see who becomes India’s next captain in the shortest format. While speculations are rife, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has taken Hardik Pandya’s name when posed this question.
“Captaincy will be decided by the selectors and we will announce it after discussing with them. You asked about Hardik, there were lot of questions over his form but we and selectors showed faith in him and he proved himself,” Shah said on Monday as quoted by Hindustan Times.
With the T20 WC out of the way, the next big ICC event will be the Champions Trophy. So will Rohit and Kohli be a part of that event? A confident Jay Shah assured that the two seniors would be there.
“The way this team is progressing, our target is to win World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Shah assured.
Not just Rohit, even Virat Kohli announced his retirement from the shortest format.
The two Indians are the two most prolific run-getters in the history of the format. Rohit is at the top with 4231 runs, while Kohli is at the second spot with 4188 runs.
The Champions Trophy takes place in 2025 in Pakistan. It would be interesting to see if India would be willing to travel to Pakistan or not. We will keep our focus on that as well.
