‘America’s Got Talent’ season 19 recap: Did any acts receive the ‘AGT’ Golden Buzzer in ‘Auditions 5’? [LIVE BLOG]
“America’s Got Talent” season 19 continued Tuesday, July 2 with another two-hour episode of first-round auditions. Once again, this season’s hopefuls are judged by executive producer Simon Cowell on one end of the dais and Howie Mandel on the other. Seated in the middle are Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara, with Terry Crews on stage as the lively host.
In the audition phase of “AGT,” an act needs at least three of the four judges to give them a “yes” vote to advance to the next round. If two or more judges buzz the act, they are immediately eliminated. For the first time ever, each judge has not one, but two chances to hit the “golden buzzer” and send an act straight through to the live performances. Terry had one chance of his own, totaling nine acts overall that will earn the special path to the final phase of the competition.
In “Auditions 1” on May 28, Terry used his golden buzzer on comedian Learnmore Jonasi from Zimbabwe and Heidi used her first of two on 55 year old singer Richard Goodall.
In “Auditions 2” on June 4, we got a glimpse into the decision for each judge to get two Golden Buzzer uses when he first sent singer Liv Warfield through and then later couldn’t help but decide to send drone artists Sky Elements through as well.
In “Auditions 3” on June 11, Sofia put her support behind Argentinian dance group Legion following a thrilling routine involving flaming boots.
In “Auditions 4” on 25, Howie used his first Golden Buzzer to send Australian dance troupe Brent Street through to the live shows.

8:02 p.m. – The audience didn’t know what to make of Owl Man when he came on to the stage as the first audition of the night and it was only a matter of seconds in to his rendition of “Who Let the Dogs Out” before all four judges had hit their red X buttons. Things didn’t improve when A.merica’s G.olden T.iger rolled out in a wheelbarrow for their own attempt at a comedy act or when Goat vs Fish tried to explain what exactly their act is supposed to be.
8:08 p.m. – It took the arrival of the non-sibling TT Brothers and their obsession with the letter T to get the audience and judges not only smiling, but chanting “T” throughout the theater. Sofia said it was “the perfect audition,” but Simon was speechless until he realized “halfway through” that they’re actually “hilarious.” Howie called them “original” and “surprising,” starting the line of votes down the dais as “yes” for them to advance to the next round.
8:19 p.m. – The next audition was from 16 year old musician Oscar Stembridge with his original song about turning negativity into positivity. Howie told him that he had beautiful lyrics, Heidi suggested that he’s “wiser” than his age and advised him to stay in his lower voice, and Sofia told him he has “so much to give.” Simon said that he loved the song and appreciated that “everything about the audition was you.” Heidi wasn’t convinced that his level of talent was on par with others they’ve seen, but she still joined the other three judges to give Oscar four “yeses” to advance.
8:30 p.m. – Sebastian & Sonia met online before they started dating and combined their dreams in a couples aerial act. Sofia called their act “so flawless” and “so sexy” because they compliment each other on stage. Howie called them the best double aerial act he’s seen and Heidi added that they’re “mind blowing.” Simon concluded that it was “difficult and stunning and so beautifully synchronized.” He also called them “the best of this type” that he’s seen. With no hesitation, all four judges were happy to vote them through to the next round.
8:42 p.m. – In a series of kid acts that impressed the judges, 9 year old dancer Bboy Nana, Colombian beat boxer Jollux, and 8 year old dancer Boss Baby Brody all received four “yes” votes from the judges.
8:54 p.m. – The kids of shadow theater group Attraction Juniors worked on their performance for six months before bringing it to the AGT stage. Following their mixed arts performance, Howie said it was “beautiful and entertaining and original,” Heidi applauded the amount of work they’ve put in to their craft, Sofia said she was blown away by them, and Simon said it was an “easy to follow” “cute story” that people will be drawn to. The judges all said “yes” to see their act perform once more in the next round.
9:05 p.m. – Despite an on-again-off-again relationship with her stand up comedy, Erica Rhodes managed to muster up the courage to be judged on AGT. Her set focused on a Debbie Downer attitude and her unlucky history in the dating scene as an aspiring “participation trophy wife.” Howie was surprised by how funny she was because she was “real and relatable,” Heidi called it a “great audition,” and Sofia said she’s her favorite comedian she’s seen on the show and is ready to be on a sitcom. Simon even related to her bit about not caring what someone else’s house looks like. All four judges thought she was good enough to return in the next round.
9:17 p.m. – Simon was personally excited that the youth boy band group Menudo (a new generation of the well-known, ever-revolving group) because of his history developing and appreciating other groups. Simon cut them off during their first song and asked them to try something else in order to avoid the “issues with vocals.” They made it all the way through this song with Sofia recognizing that she liked them, Heidi wanting badly to understand the Spanish lyrics, and Howie admitting that they “hook” his attention as a group. Simon urged them to “be yourselves” by singing and wearing what they want because it’ll come across better. Howie gave them a “no” vote, but with Heidi, Sofia and Simon all saying “yes” then the group was able to advance.
9:31 p.m. – 30 year old Iowan and personal trainer Connett Croghan had to tell Simon that he truly believes his act of “rock and roll jump rope” is worth winning a million dollar. Unfortunately for Connett, Simon’s hesitation was well-founded and he was buzzed off stage by four red X buzzers.
9:34 p.m. – Self-described shy magician Chris Wilson from Canada described his passion for magic well to the judges, but after a single trick it became apparent that he was simply a shock value comedy act. Him flipping the bird to the judges was what one audience member called “not magic.” Howie and Heidi both hit their red X buttons and then Sofia and Simon voted with an official “no” to ensure that he would not advance.
9:44 p.m. – Young-Min was able to restore Simon’s love for magic with a routine that he hoped would “awaken the light in others.” Sofia said it was “mesmerizing” because it was “very different and very dramatic,” Heidi also loved how calming it was, and Howie agreed that the AGT stage is the best place for their brand of magic. Simon differed from the other judges, saying he “wasn’t mesmerized” and said he was waiting for the “huge thing” to happen at the end. Despite his reservations, Simon still voted “yes” alongside the other judges.
9:53 p.m. – The final performer of the night was 9 year old singer Pranysqa Mishra from Florida with her version of “River Deep Mountain High.” Heidi told Pranysqa that she “did not expect” the big vocal to come out of her and “not wanting to hear what Howie, Simon and Sofia have to say” she hit the Golden Buzzer.
