AUSTIN (KXAN) -- It's the time of the year when we have to pay a little extra attention to our puppies and kittens who are afraid of the loud noises from fireworks. Some four-footed friends have no issue dealing with the fireworks, but there are others who are frightened by the ruckus.
There are several things pet owners can do to help their animals fare better on July 4. KXAN's Rich Segal spoke with Dr. Kelly Hopkins from Bluebonnet Animal Hospital about how we can do an efficient job of keeping our pets safe.
Many dogs and cats bolt in fear and, once frightened, they often continue to run. Hopkins said pet owners have a much better chance of finding their dogs if they are microchipped. It's easy and painless for dogs.
Other tips Hopkins mentioned included closing all curtains and playing calming music at a low volume on the radio.
Cats can also be kept in a smaller room with that same soothing music played on low volume. Some kitties do not like loud noise, so the music should be kept at a minimum volume.
Medications could be needed, but pet owners should consult their veterinarian before administering pharmaceuticals.
Some also suggest that rather than spending money on fireworks, people could buy pet food or toys to donate to a local animal shelter.
