TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Hurricane Beryl made landfall as a Category 2 storm Friday morning before weakening to a Category 1 storm.
The hurricane made landfall just north of Tulum, Mexico with 110 mph winds.
As of the 11 a.m. update, forecasters with the National Hurricane Center said Beryl's maximum sustained winds have decreased to 85 mph.
The hurricane is expected to weaken more after it moves inland and crosses the Yucatan Peninsula. However, it is expected to slowly re-intensify once it moves over the Gulf of Mexico, possibly reaching hurricane strength.
Forecaster said Beryl is expected to emerge over the southwestern Gulf of Mexico Friday night and then move northwestward toward northern Mexico and southern Texas by the end of the weekend.
