Temperatures are hot but the New York Mets are cooling off. After an incredible June run which saw the Mets go 16-8, New York has faced some challenges as of late. They dropped two to the Washington Nationals and had a very rough start to the Pittsburgh series losing 14-2. One player continued to produce during last week’s games when he played; José Iglesias. This week’s Statistical Spotlight will feature Iglesias and his performance from June 29 to July 5.
Iglesias had a remarkable June, slashing for .417/.462/.528 with an OPS of .990. Last week, Iglesias came back down to earth slightly, slashing .278/.263/.579 with an OPS of .842. While his average came down, his slugging stayed consistently high due to his three doubles and a home run. He drove in five runs and produced three runs during this span.
Taking a look at Jose Iglesias‘s hit chart depicted below, he was able to cover all of the zone. He drove pitches that were up, down, inside, and outside of the strike zone. While this is a sample size for last week’s performance, we can see the correlation for why he was able to maintain his .417 average for the month of June. Another reason why Iglesias hits for a high average is because he does not strike out. Iglesias did not record a single strikeout throughout last week’s games. He also displayed some power with his home run coming off a 96 MPH fastball down and away in the zone. This shot was hit to dead center for 413 feet.
Despite having some down numbers, Iglesias is still producing and has been a jack of all trades. He is a versatile defensive player, being called upon to field third and second base in the latter innings of multiple games. He has been hitting for average. He has shown to hit for power. There have been many moves by the front office this year, and signing Iglesias has been a major highlight for Stearns. Keeping Iglesias in the mix can prove pivotal to helping the Mets sustain success during the dog days of summer.
