This hidden gem in the Basilicata region of southern Italy is one of the oldest continuously occupied cities in the world—and one of the most underrated destinations in Italy. The Sassi, an area of buildings and cave dwellings perched on cliffs, was evacuated in the 1950s due to poor living conditions, but it later received a UNESCO grant and government assistance that has helped transform it into a bustling hub of Italian art and history. When to Visit Italy

Shoulder seasons of spring (April and May) and fall (mid-September through early November) are optimal times to visit Italy when temperatures are milder, prices lower, and crowds thinner. Major airlines, including Delta, United, American, and ITA Airways, offer direct flights from various U.S.-based hubs to Rome, Milan, Naples, Venice, Florence, and other major cities in Italy, depending on the airline. Many other carriers fly to Rome’s Fiumicino Airport from New York’s JFK (the most popular route from the U.S., just under 9 hours) at competitive prices, especially if you don't mind an extra stop.
