Petal Side Table is a minimal table created by Brooklyn-based designer Jeffrey Cheung of A Low Volume. The piece was created for the debut edition of COLLECTIBLE New York. Crafted from aluminum and longleaf heart pine—reclaimed from a building on West 14th Street in Manhattan—the table combines a minimalist aesthetic with functional design. Its adaptability is key, serving as a pedestal, stool, or side table, making it ideal for compact urban spaces. The table’s structure, composed of 18 wooden segments or “petals,” draws on symbolism from Chinese culture, where the number 18 is associated with good fortune.
Cheung’s design practice emphasizes a deep understanding of materials, with each piece crafted in his Red Hook, Brooklyn studio. Rejecting mass production, A Low Volume creates limited-edition objects that prioritize craftsmanship and thoughtful detail. The Petal Side Table is also available in two other finishes: douglas fir and a bold cornflower blue. Through his work, Cheung continues to explore the intersection of form and function, producing pieces that are not only aesthetically engaging but also practical in everyday settings. His commitment to small-batch production and material sensitivity remains central to his design philosophy.
