Ever since people started donning VR headsets there has always been the clamor to play Minecraft in virtual reality. The opportunity to to become present in the blocky world you have created made the marriage seem perfect, even though quite a few technologic leaps were required to get everything to play nice.
Then the was the fact that caught a lot of people out. Minecraft’s whip-panning control system of rapid forward movement and turning does not tend to play nicely with a lot of people’s brains leading to potentially severe motion sickness.
VR versions of the game added features to combat this, such as playing in a window so that your brain had something else to focus on to tell it you weren’t rolling around in the mid-Atlantic in a hurricane, but it is fair to say Minecraft in VR remained a niche experience, rather than the one people had hoped for.
Now, Minecraft devs at Mojang have sounded the death knell for the game on the PSVR with an announcement that it is ending support as of March of 2025.
In a dev post Mojang said, “Our ability to support PlayStation VR has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025. After you receive the final update, you will still receive updates on your PlayStation and be able to play without PlayStation VR. From this point on you can keep building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Tokens) will continue to be available. You will no longer be able to use your PlayStation VR with Minecraft as it will no longer be supported in the latest updates.”
Mojang did not elaborate further on why it can’t continue to support PlayStation VR. We have reached out to them for comment
