Tottenham’s new set piece coaching plan revealed to fix persistent problems
Spurs and Postecoglou have come under fire over their inability to deal with set-piece scenarios after Tottenham lost to rivals Arsenal via a corner. However, reports reveal that the club remain confident in their training plan for set-pieces.
Spurs have one of the worst set-piece records in England
Spurs’ defeat to Arsenal on Sunday was another loss characterised by the team’s lack of ability to handle set-piece situations.
Gabriel Magalhes’ winning header means that three of Arsenal’s last four goals against Tottenham have come via a corner.
Tottenham’s set-piece troubles are not just an issue against Arsenal however, only Nottingham Forest have conceded more set-piece goals than Tottenham’s eighteen since Ange Postecoglou took over. (Sky Sports)
Postecoglou insisted that his team do train set-pieces after the loss to Arsenal, stating: “I know, I know, for some reason people think I don’t care about set pieces and it’s a narrative that you can keep going on for ages and ages. I understand that. Like I said, we work on them all the time like we do for every other team”. (Football.London)
Nick Montgomery is in charge of Tottenham’s set-pieces
Despite the widespread belief that Postecoglou neglects set-pieces in training, a report from the Daily Mail has revealed that Ange and Spurs do practice them, with Nick Montgomery in charge of coaching that area.
Montgomery joined Spurs this summer in the wake of Chris Davies’ departure to Birmingham City and has been tasked with coaching Spurs on both attacking and defensive set-pieces since his arrival.
There is reported to be a belief inside Tottenham that while Gabriel’s match-winning header increased the media scrutiny around Spurs’ handlings of set-pieces, Montgomery is still trusted and is believed to have improved Tottenham’s ability to defend set-pieces.

Montgomery will need to accelerate his improvements as Tottenham’s set-piece coach very quickly, as currently there isn’t much tangible difference in Spurs’ ability to deal with corners in particular as proven by Gabriel’s match-winning header.
Spurs, and in particular, Vicario, will need to make quick adjustments to their ability to deal with corners as teams will now start to target the weakness after it has been exposed time and time again with it now a race against time as to how quickly Spurs can amend the issue before it costs them too many points.
