Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton aiming to make a statement against Class C power Schuylerville
WARRENSBURG, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- No team in Section II has put up numbers over the last three seasons like Warrensburg/Lake George/Bolton. Since the start of the 2022 campaign, the Wolverines boast a scoring differential of better than +1,000. Friday night, Mike Perrone's squad will face what might be their toughest test all season in the NEWS10 Sports 1st & 10 "Game of the Week."
The reigning Class D runner-up, Warrensburg has roared out to a 2-0 start after wins of 52-0 and 54-6, and was slated No. 3 in the first week of New York State rankings.
Warrensburg will be traveling to Schuylerville this week - the fifth-ranked team in the state for Class C - in a rematch of the 2022 Class C sectional championship game, which the Wolverines won 20-7.
Even though this is a non-league game on paper, Warrensburg isn't treating it as such. The players view it as an opportunity to not only put the rest of Class D on notice, but the state.
"This is 100% a tone-setter," said senior fullback/linebacker Nick Jeckel. "We will never face in Class D a team like this. This is a one-of-a-kind team."
"All the guys in the locker room know this is a test and know this is a game that is gonna set the precedent for basically the entire season," added senior quarterback/defensive back Ben Sheldon. "We wanna be a state caliber-type team, and that's where we prove it; Friday night."
Since merging programs in 2022 (the team was then Warrensburg/Lake George/North Warren Central), the Wolverines have lost to just one Section II program: Stillwater in last year's Class D final.
The only other team to really even threaten Warrensburg has been Schuylerville, and Perrone knows that his guys will be in for a battle, but that they'll also benefit from playing such a high-caliber opponent this early in the season.
"We're creating our tradition since the merger; Schuylerville has been fantastic for a very long time - since Coach (John) Bowen has gotten there," said Perrone. "We have a lot of respect for those guys. We've played 25 games since our merger, and only two of the games have been decided by less than 16 points. That's been our matchups with Schuylerville. We know it's gonna be a highly-contentious, tough, physical, old-school football game."
Kickoff Friday from Schuylerville is set for 7:00 p.m. Tune into 1st & 10 at 10:30 on FOX 23 and NEWS10 at 11:00 for highlights and reactions from this game, as well as highlights from the full Week 2 high school football slate.
