LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- A Lafayette federal grand jury indicted an Alexandria doctor on Wednesday in connection with a Medicare fraud scheme involving medically unnecessary urine drug testing services.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Louisiana announced that doctor Michael W. Dole was indicted on one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and five counts of healthcare fraud. Dole faces up to 10 years in prison on each count if convicted.

According to court documents, Dole owned and operated a pain management practice in Alexandria that had an in-house drug testing laboratory.

Dole is accused of billing Medicare more than $32.7 million from January 2010 through July 2023 for testing of routinely more than 22 classes of drugs in urine specimens from all of his patients, despite undocumented use or suspicion of use of those drugs by those patients, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Dole was allegedly reimbursed more than $11.7 million for the medically unnecessary urine drug testing claims. Dole is accused of using the proceeds of the fraud on personal expenses.
