As a TV commercial director with over a decade in the business, I've become something of an expert in the art of living out of travel backpacks and carry-on luggage. My career has taken me from Chicago to Cape Town, with pit stops in places like Serbia and Austin along the way. It's a lifestyle that's earned me the highest level of status on Delta and a respectable chunk of Marriott points—though I'm not sure my personal life would agree it's been worth the trade-off.
For years, I trudged through airports with the serviceable but great-looking Everlane ReNew Transit Backpack. When it was finally hole-ridden and dirt-caked, I embarked on a quest worthy of Indiana Jones (if Indy was really into ergonomic design and water-resistant fabrics) for the best travel backpack I could find. That's when I stumbled upon Evergoods, a name that kept popping up in almost every YouTube review I watched. Was it great marketing? Or actually a really great bag?
Best Travel Backpack Overall: Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L

I caved and bought Evergoods Civic Panel Loader 24L, and I have to say, it was love at first zip. This bag has more staying power than most Hollywood marriages. After a year of abuse, it still looks fresh off the shelf. The real magic, though, is in the details. There's a small zipper up top for quick access to essentials like AirPods and hand sanitizer with a handy clip for house keys that will only again be used when I return home.
The main compartment opens in a satisfying U-shape, eliminating a dreaded bottom-of-the-bag treasure hunt. And the laptop compartment? It's got more padding than a baby's car seat (precious cargo, after all)—complete with a bright red Velcro latch that screams, "Hey idiot, don't forget to secure your overpriced MacBook Pro!"

There's more to appreciate. The designers at Evergoods have even thought about how you might swing this bag around your body to grab something on the go. Plus, there's a reinforced side handle for when you want to hand-carry your backpack from the overhead compartment. No more saggy (bag) sides.
Just when I thought I'd found The One, Evergoods sent me its Civic Travel Bag 20L to test (I had purchased the Civic Panel Loader outright). Think of it as the Civic Panel Loader's slightly smaller sibling. This more compact wonder has added quick-access pockets, perfect for your next TSA striptease. There's even a dedicated spot for your water bottle or umbrella. (While it's currently sold out, Evergoods Civic Travel Bag 20L is available for preorder around the end of October 2024.)

So, which one reigns supreme? If you're bouncing around the country domestically, the Civic Travel Bag 20L is your new best friend. For those international jaunts or weekends away where you might want to pack absolutely everything into a single bag, the Civic Panel Loader cannot be beat.
In the end, both bags left me more than impressed. They're so well-designed, you might find yourself being approached by other Evergoods enthusiasts at the airport, eager to geek out over zipper placement and load distribution. It's like being part of a very niche, very nerdy club of people who really, really like backpacks. Or just need one that stands up to untold airline miles.

Best Technical Hiking Backpack for Men: Teton Sports Scout 3400, $90
As Teton itself explains, this is “not your basic backpack." The backpack comes with multiple adjustment points, including on the straps and torso to create more personalized wear. It comes with plenty of compartmentalized storage space too, including a sleeping bag compartment and compression straps, along with a detachable rain cover and exterior pockets for all your grab-and-go needs.

Heading out for a day of cycling requires a few things — water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a wallet, and maybe a few snacks. The Locallion Cycling Backpack is perfect for all those necessities. It includes attachment ports for a water bladder to keep you hydrated (note: the bladder is sold separately), while there’s an additional mesh side pocket large enough for a secondary water bottle. The backpack itself is made with tear-resistant nylon, and comes with a breathable mesh pad on the back to stay cool and allow for breathability on long rides. There's an adjustable chest strap, adjustable waist strap, and adjustable shoulder straps to allow for ultra personalized sizing, which is ideal for wind resistance while riding. It also includes reflective stripes on the shoulder and front panel for safe biking in the early morning hours, evening, and night. Though the backpack is certainly ideal for cycling, it can be used for a variety of outdoor activities that require minimal packing.
“I bought this backpack a year ago for biking,” one reviewer wrote. “It is a light backpack for day trips and distributes the weight very comfortably. It is also very comfortable and appropriate for day hikes. There is some structure to it and the mesh on the back allows some airflow across your back. For about 30 bucks it is an unbelievably good buy!”
Best Beach-Ready Backpack: Carhartt Cargo Series Large Backpack, From $99 (Was $120)
Sometimes you need to pack something extra special, and the Carhartt Cargo Series Large Backpack can help. The 30-liter backpack comes with a spacious main compartment large enough to store a few day’s worth of clothing, and comes with a padded pocket that can fit up to a 15-inch laptop. However, the winning element here is the attachable three-can insulated cooler made with ripstop material to keep three post-hike, beach, bike, whatever, beverages frosty for an entire day.
“Husband wanted this very much,” one reviewer wrote. “He loves it. And he abuses it regularly as a field biologist who stores his gear in it and it still holds up. He swears by this brand. He has lots of Carhartt items and I suspect that he will have this for a long time.”
What to Look for in the Best Backpack for Travel
When looking for a new backpack, no matter what its intended use, it’s good to keep a few things in mind: comfort, size, and style. For men’s backpacks that means finding one with adjustable shoulder straps so you can both customize the fit and have the right padding on your shoulders for all-day wear — bonus points for contoured back padding and padded waist straps.
It’s also a good idea to look for a backpack with at least a water-resistant outer shell so you won’t worry during inclement weather. Additionally, keep an eye out for the quality of the zipper, external pockets, as well as ensuring your new backpack has the proper number of internal pockets to keep all your things easily organized. Plan to use your backpack while traveling? Look for anti-theft mechanisms and some high-tech add-ons like USB charging ports too.
