School zone speeding fines could be used for road improvements

ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- The fines collected from drivers who fail to obey the speed limit in Albany will go directly to the city's budget. The city has issued more than 13,000 tickets in 11 days.

Speed cameras were installed in four school zones ahead of the start of the school year. Mayor Kathy Sheehan said the funding could be used to make traffic safety improvements in Washington Park, but city leaders hope the number of violations will drop significantly as drivers adjust to the new rules.

"I don't ever want to rely on fines with respect to making sure that I balance my budget," Sheehan said. "We want people to comply."

The city hopes to install speed cameras in all of their school zones by the end of the current school year.
