Sports Briefs: Matchups set for MCAL water polo semis
Ten different Tamalpais High players scored as the fourth-seeded Red-tailed Hawks beat five seed Marin Academy, 20-4, in an MCAL boys water polo playoff opener Tuesday in San Anselmo.
Senior Bern Kent led the way with four goals and three assists, while freshman Jasper Feldman chipped in with three goals and four assists, and senior Reed Hanna added three goals. Senior Andrew Sternfels notched two goals, three assists and four steals for Tam, which advanced to Thursday’s semifinals against top-seeded Archie Williams.
In the other boys game, third-seeded Terra Linda beat No. 6 Novato, 19-6, to set up a semifinal showdown with No. 2 Redwood. Cameron Hellar and Soren Jessen each scored four goals on seven shots for the Trojans. Hellar also grabbed five steals. Terra Linda’s Patrick Knopf, Andrew Chong and Jack Mathewson each scored two goals. Trojan netminder Joey Carvalho had eight saves.
• In the girls first-round playoffs, No. 4 Redwood beat No. 5 Marin Catholic, 11-4, and No. 3 Tam beat No. 6 Terra Linda, 15-8. Redwood will face Archie Williams in Thursday’s semifinals, while Tam is scheduled to play No. 2 Marin Academy.
Prep cross country
The San Domenico boys and girls both finished third in their respective cross country races in Monday’s Bay Counties League meet at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park Polo Field. Likewise, the Marin Academy boys and girls finished third in their races, as the varsity fields were divided into two events.
Senior Devin Price ran the 2.95-mile course in 15 minutes, 44.98 seconds, nearly 15 seconds off the winning time, to place third overall. Panthers senior Oliver Swain (17:02.99) and freshman Zoravar Nijjar (18:11.87) placed 22nd and 3rd, respectively.
In the girls race, San Domenico juniors Veronika Elias (20:29.70) and Sarah Haskell (21:09.54) finished 16th and 18th, respectively, with senior Tosia Konczak (21:27.65) coming across in 20th.
In the second girls race, Marin Academy junior Luella Shepard (18:47.44) placed second, nearly 1:11 off the winning time set by Bay School senior Lucy Peterson (17:36.47). The Wildcats’ Izzy Bergholt (21:45.91) was 12th. In the second boys race, Marin Academy’s Fineas DeGooyer (16:46.36) placed fourth and Ilan Goldschmidt (17:37.81) was 13th.
• The Branson School’s Audrey Spaly, Farah Allen and Maya Gidney finished 1-2-3 at the Mt. SAC Invitational over the weekend. The Bulls handily won the 3-mile girls Division V Red varsity race, led by their trio of runners who each finished in less than 20 minutes. Spaly set the pace in 19:21, followed by Allen 16 seconds later and Gidney at 19:52.
