The Texans lost one of their top players and team leaders, and the New England Patriots should be on the phones to help them out.
Stefon Diggs suffered a torn ACL last Sunday and will miss the rest of the season. Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans was visibly distraught when he revealed the news to reporters Tuesday, showing how important Diggs was to the locker room even in his first season with the team.
The Texans were a preseason Super Bowl favorite, but with Diggs out and Nico Collins sidelined until at least Week 10, Tank Dell is their No. 1 wide receiver. That reality and C.J. Stroud’s rookie contract window had ESPN’s Dan Graziano identifying Houston as a potential active player in the trade market.
“And I do hear rumblings they’re poking around at receiver. (Darius) Slayton, Kendrick Bourne and K.J. Osborn are names to watch, and I think they’d want in on Jakobi Meyers if the (Las Vegas) Raiders made him available,” Graziano wrote Wednesday.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer reported Tuesday that New England has “gotten calls” on Osborn and Tyquan Thornton, so it does feel like it might make another trade after sending Joshua Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Osborn’s been vocal about his lack of playing time and seems open to being dealt before the trade deadline. And it would be in the Patriots’ best interest to seek out teams like the Texans that need help at key positions.
