Austin Capobianco seemingly didn’t leave Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night with any remorse, but he knows he was in the wrong.
Capobianco was the fan who interfered with Mookie Betts in the first inning of World Series Game 4. “Interfered” might be putting it lightly, as the 38-year-old used all of his might to rip the baseball from Betts’ glove after the Los Angeles Dodgers star tracked down a fly in foul territory.
The Connecticut native is a Yankees season-ticket holder, and as he revealed to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers after the incident, the interference wasn’t exactly an impulse decision.
“We always joke about the ball in our area,” Capobianco told Rogers. “We’re not going to go out of our way to attack. If it’s in our area, we’re going to ‘D’ up. Someone defends, someone knocks the ball. We talk about it. We’re willing to do this.”
Capobianco didn’t try to remove himself from guilt after the run-in with Betts. He knew he was getting the boot less than a half hour after the first pitch of New York’s 11-4 win.
“I know when I’m in the wrong and as soon as I did it, I was like, ‘Boys I’m out of here,'” Capobianco told Rogers. “I patrol that wall and they know that.”
However, Capobianco revealed to Rogers that the Yankees told him he would be allowed to attend Game 5. So, time will tell if we’ll see any more antics from him Wednesday night in the Bronx.
