Ange Postecoglou rates Premier League progress over winning cups at Spurs
Ange Postecoglou was asked if finishing higher in the Premier League is more important than winning cup competitions, and his answer is very interesting.
Top four finish vs winning cups
There has been a perception among the Tottenham fan base that the club have always prioritised a top-four finish over the cup competitions.
The supporters have seemingly been quite frustrated by this approach and a majority of them would now prefer to see Spurs lifting silverware, particularly given that the club’s last trophy came all the way back in 2008.
The Carabao Cup undoubtedly represents Tottenham’s best chance of ending their trophy drought, which is why many will hope to see Ange Postecoglou prioritise the clash against Manchester City by naming a strong side.
Ange Postecoglou comments on the importance of cups
Postecoglou has now said that one cannot judge league form independently of the cup displays, with all results coming down to the team’s consistency at the end of the day.
However, the 59-year-old acknowledged that the league finish is a better indicator of progress since it is over 38 games.
When asked if winning a trophy is more important than where Spurs finish in the league, the Australian told Football.London: “In my mind, they go hand in hand but I still think progress in the league is a better indicator because then you know you’re putting yourself in a position to win every week and compete in every competition.
“That’s the only thing you can strive for. You can’t guarantee success. No-one can. But you can put yourself in a position. If you can put yourself in a position in the league on a consistent basis I think by extension you should be strong in the knockout comps. That’s still where I think our most meaningful progress lies.”
Postecoglou insists cup win is not a solution
The Tottenham head coach pointed out that winning the Carabao Cup or the FA Cup is not the be-all-and-end-all as some people seem to suggest.
He pointed to Erik Ten Hag’s sacking as an example that managers are still under pressure to show signs of consistency in the Premier League even if they manage to win trophies.
Postecoglou added: “Winning a comp, is it a positive? Absolutely. Our supporters will love it. It’s great for the club. Yes, you get that winning feeling too. But it’s not a panacea for everything, obviously.
“I just don’t know in today’s world. We’ve got a manager [Erik ten Hag] here who’s won two in the last two years who’s just got the sack. Everyone tells me, just win a trophy and you’ll be fine. I don’t think so. The measures these days are constantly shifting.
“There’s always something that people perceive to be better. What’s more important for me is that we’re getting to get to a space where we’re consistently challenging for all honours. If we’re there in that space, where big clubs are, and where we should be, the rest will take care of itself.”
