Van driver accused of killing traffic flagger in Brooklyn
BEDFORD-STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (PIX11) — A van driver is accused of hitting and killing a construction worker after blowing through a busy intersection in Brooklyn Tuesday afternoon, police said.
Clyde Mercury, 36, was allegedly speeding in a white Ford van when he drove through the intersection at Myrtle Avenue and Walworth Street and tried to pass a box truck before veering into a construction zone just before 2 p.m., according to the NYPD and sources.
The van hit the box truck and then struck the traffic flagger, 37-year-old Luis Mario Sangurima, police said.
Video from the scene showed a silver car wedged between a white Enterprise van and a construction truck, according to Citizen App footage.
Mercury was arrested at the scene and charged with criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving, reckless endangerment, and failure to exercise due care, cops said.
His arraignment was pending Wednesday.
