UNICEF warns of alarming child deaths in Gaza amid ongoing conflict
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a grave warning about the “alarming rise in child mortality” in northern Gaza.
Over 50 children have reportedly died in the past 48 hours in the Jabalia refugee camp, with Save the Children describing this as indicative of “the intensity of the conflict and its war on children.”
Raechel Cummings, the humanitarian director of the International Rescue Committee and head of the UN team in Gaza, stated on Al Jazeera, “Children continue to live under constant bombardment and in a state of perpetual fear.”
According to Palestinian officials, more than 16,700 children have been killed in the Israeli attacks on Gaza since October, constituting over a third of the total verified death toll of 43,341.
Cummings, speaking from Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, reported that approximately 20,000 children are either missing or have lost family members due to the ongoing conflict.
The situation has worsened in the last month, with more than 1,000 people reported killed during Israel’s violent siege of northern Gaza.
The Gaza Civil Defense Organization has also released a recent report indicating that over 1,300 individuals have died in Gaza in the past month.
The continuous escalation of violence not only endangers the lives of children but also raises serious concerns about the long-term impact on the health and well-being of the entire population in the region.
Immediate humanitarian interventions are essential to protect vulnerable populations, particularly children, who bear the brunt of this conflict.
The international community must respond urgently to alleviate the suffering and provide necessary support to affected families.
