The Boston Red Sox have the chance to make a major splash when the MLB Winter Meetings commence next week.
Is that Juan Soto? Is it an elite starting pitcher? Is it a right-handed bat for lineup balance?
Whoever it may be, the Red Sox’s search for a consequential move for a third consecutive seasons. The 2022 meetings brought the additions of Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin to retool the back of the bullpen with veteran strike-throwers. Last season marked a precedent for the start of Craig Breslow’s regime. Boston moved Alex Verdugo to the New York Yankees for a trio of pitching prospects.
Prior to this stretch, the Red Sox had a few years of relative inactivity in regard to impact moves during the pivotal December week. The last move of serious notability had been the re-signing of Nathan Eovaldi just weeks after the former Red Sox starter rose as a postseason hero on the way to the 2018 World Series title.
Boston needs to stay on schedule and make a statement move heading into the week. That could be the first of multiple impact additions in efforts to get the Red Sox back to the playoffs for the first time since 2018.
The MLB Winter Meetings run in Dallas from Dec. 9-12.
