Evergy assistance event helping with winter heating bills in Topeka

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Evergy is holding an event to help those who need financial assistance for heating this winter.

From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 6 Evergy will have specialists helping customers with Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) applications at the Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library located at 1515 Southwest 10th Avenue. The application period will be open until March 31.

Attendees should bring proof of income for all household members and copies of current utility bills. To qualify, households must have one adult who's responsible for the heating costs. The combined gross income for the home must not be over 150% of the federal poverty level.

"Evergy is one of five utilities partnering with the Kansas Department for Children (DCF) and Families to help eligible Kansans receive assistance," Evergy wrote in the press release. "LIEAP, administered through DCF, is a federally funded program that helps eligible households pay a portion of their home energy costs by providing a one-time per-year benefit. Customers may use it to restore or maintain electricity, natural gas, propane, and other home heating fuels."
