Puerto Rico’s new natural resources secretary has shelved an investigation into allegations of illegal construction in a protected area on the island’s southwest coast. The move has sparked an outcry. The administrative order was published late on Thursday. It comes after Gov. Jenniffer González called the investigation that began under the previous administration “political persecution.” The probe targeted alleged violators, including González’s in-laws. They are accused of illegally cutting mangroves and illegal construction at their home at La Parguera. It was designated a natural reserve in 1979. González and her in-laws have denied the accusations. Puerto Rico attorney Pedro Saadé said Thursday's order is illegal.
