CAROLINE Mhandu from the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) ran like a woman on a mission and came out on top.
The 29-year-old correctional officer dominated the female half marathon at the 2025 Econet Victoria Falls Marathon, crossing the finish line in a sizzling time of 1 hour 14 minutes and 52 seconds to clinch gold in the 21km race.
Mhandu, who has been a consistent podium threat in the local road running scene, showed poise, pace and power as she shook off stiff competition from more fancied rivals.
In the men’s 21km race, it was Wayne Kabondo, aged 26, who proved untouchable.
Kabondo clocked an impressive 1 hour 3 minutes and 48 seconds, outpacing the field and stamping his authority as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest long-distance prospects.
The two runners added spark to what was already a high-energy morning, as thousands of athletes from around the world descended on the majestic resort town for one of Africa’s most scenic road races.
Mhandu’s victory was not just a personal win but a major boost for the ZPCS athletics team, which has been quietly producing top performers in both national and international races.
Kabondo, on the other hand, has been on the rise, with this win adding to a string of solid performances that have seen him edge closer to elite status. His form on Sunday showed composure and explosive pace as he broke away from the leading pack at the 15km mark and never looked back.
The Econet Victoria Falls Marathon continues to attract elite athletes, rising stars and everyday fitness fanatics. With events including the full marathon, half marathon and fun runs, the race is now firmly on the international running calendar.
For Mhandu and Kabondo, their 2025 victories are statements of intent
Caroline broke free from the pack like a woman unleashed.
Kabondo ran like he was being chased by thunder.
And in the heart of Victoria Falls, both wrote their names into Zimbabwe’s road-running folklore.
