John McEnroe Calls For Immediate Rules Change at Wimbledon
John McEnroe has plenty of experience at Wimbledon as a competitor and a commentator.
During his heyday in the 1980s, McEnroe won tennis' oldest and most prestigious tournament three times and lost in the finals twice. McEnroe was back at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club this year to call the action for the BBC, including Saturday's women's singles final between Poland's Iga Swiatek and America's Amanda Anisimova.
Prior to the match, the cameras spotted Swiatek warming up while wearing a pair of oversized headphones. Anisimova, meanwhile, had in a smaller pair of Airpods.
This is common behavior from players nowadays, but McEnroe is not a fan. On the air, he called for Wimbledon officials to ban the devices.
"They shouldn't allow them to wear Airpods or headphones because you have got to get them to enjoy this [the atmosphere] instead of playing some music," McEnroe said. "Come on now, ladies!"
Again, McEnroe is a Wimbledon legend, but we're not expecting his "Get off my lawn" moment to have any impact on future policy at the event.
As for the match itself, Swiatek, the No. 4 player in the world, made quick work of Anisimova, winning 6-0, 6-0. The dominant performance gave the 24-year-old her sixth Grand Slam title and first win at Wimbledon.
“Everyone is in a state of shock at what just transpired. I’ve got to hand it to Swiatek because nobody saw this coming, nobody saw Swiatek being this good on this surface after the struggles she’s had," McEnroe said, via Tennis365.
“She played fantastic, it was a fantastic hour against someone who absolutely froze which is really, really hard to watch and I feel terrible for Anisimova. But well deserved for Iga.”
