Walmart Cites 'Friction Reduction' as It Cuts Jobs in Store Support Shakeup
In May of 2025, Walmart revealed that it was going to cut around 1,500 jobs as "part of a restructuring push to simplify its operations."
Those cuts took place in the global technology operations, e-commerce fulfillment and advertising business.
Now, the giant retailer has decided to cut some jobs once again, per a report from Jaewon Kang of Bloomberg. These cuts are hundreds of store-support roles, including the elimination of the market coordinator job.
Cedric Clark, an executive vice president of store operations, released a statement on the decision on Wednesday, per Bloomberg.
We’re simplifying our market support structure, reducing touchpoints and friction for our store associates,” Clark said.
According to the release, Walmart is also eliminating certain other positions, including coach and coordinator roles at Walmart Academy, the company’s training hub for store employees and managers.
According to the Walmart corporate website, the company had 1.6 million employees in the United States at the end of 2024, which makes it the largest private employer in the country.
Around the world, the company had 2.1 million employees, but a number of cuts have taken place in 2025 alone.
In February, it was reported that the office in Charlotte, North Carolina, was closing, and some workers were even asked to relocate from New Jersey to either Bentonville, Arkansas or Sunnyvale, California.
While these latest cuts aren't as significant as others, it is an attempt to "simplify structure."
