'Massive reaction': Expert warns Trump’s ‘toxic sugar’ tactic about to backfire
Veteran tech journalist Kara Swisher predicted Thursday evening that the Jeffrey Epstein story will follow the president for some time.
On Thursday, the Wall Street Journal published a story linking Epstein and President Donald Trump together in an unusual way. Trump reportedly sent Epstein a letter for his 50th birthday that included some intimate details that have not previously been revealed.
In the letter, Trump reportedly outlined a naked woman with a dark marker and signed his name across her waist as if to resemble pubic hair. He also told Epstein that the two men "have certain things in common."
Swisher said Trump isn't going to be able to outrun this story because it's intertwined with the foundations of his MAGA base.
"It's not going to end until he releases the files in some substantive way, which he seems resistant to do, and could be possibly for these reasons," Swisher said on CNN's "Anderson Cooper 360."
Outside of the story itself, Swisher suggested that the way Trump curated his base could also haunt him. Trump's MAGA base is very internet savvy, and the Epstein story is a made-for-internet saga, according to Swisher.
"The online reaction is going to be massive, especially among his supporters, and that's the real problem here," Swisher said. "These people have been bred on conspiracy theories. He's been feeding them a lot of it and getting them used to it."
"It's like feeding children tons of toxic sugar. Don't be surprised that they behave like this," Sisher continued.
