Former MLB pitcher Ben McDonald recovering after fall from deer stand

BATON ROUGE, La. (WVLA) — Ben McDonald, an MLB pitcher turned broadcaster, says he is recovering after a scary fall from a deer stand.

McDonald, 57, shared a video of himself in a hospital bed on social media Friday, with a caption reading, “This is what a severe concussion looks and sounds like."

In the video, McDonald appears confused and asks what happened. Someone off-camera explains that the chain or strap of his deer stand broke.

“Apparently I fell out of a deer stand 25 feet up,” McDonald said in his post, adding that he suffered a concussion and two cracked vertebrae. He also thanked the doctors and everyone who reached out with support.

McDonald was first selected in the 27th round of the 1986 MLB Draft by the Atlanta Braves out of high school. He was later drafted first overall by the Baltimore Orioles in 1989 after three strong seasons at LSU. He went on to pitch for seven years with the Orioles before finishing out his MLB career with the Milwaukee Brewers.

The Louisiana native, who now works as an analyst for the Orioles broadcasts and as a college baseball analyst for SEC Network/ESPN, was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. Two years prior, McDonald was inducted into the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
